For over 25 years, I have climbed ladders, inspected walls, and applied finishes with a singular goal: to transform houses into homes that reflect the unique style of the people living in them.
My name is Florian Spahiu, and I am the owner and decorative faux artist behind Ancient Modern Finishes. While my hands do the work of painting and plastering, my role goes beyond simple application. I act as a guide for homeowners in Bonita Springs and Southwest Florida, helping them navigate the complex interplay of interior design, material selection, and surface finishes.

A journey rooted in old-world craftsmanship
My path to becoming a decorative artist began long before I established Ancient Modern Finishes in Florida. It started in 1985, when I first picked up a brush. However, a pivotal moment occurred during a house restoration in Albania. While working on a property featuring an old Byzantine style, I realized that standard painting could not satisfy my creative drive. I needed to explore the depth and texture of faux finishing.
Training across continents
To master this craft, I sought training from some of the world's most historically rich regions for art and architecture. In 1990, I moved to Athens, Greece, to attend the School of Art taught by the Italian artist Farinola. For a decade, I applied my knowledge of faux finishes in Greece, refining my techniques and expanding my artistic capabilities.
My education continued with private courses in Italy, where I became intimate with authentic Italian plaster techniques. When my family relocated to Boca Raton in 2000, I further honed these skills through independent study. I received certifications in Faux Effects, European Marbling, and Wood Graining under the instruction of Master Mike McNeil.
This diverse background allows me to bring a unique blend of European tradition and modern innovation to every project I undertake.
Building trust in Southwest Florida
Since launching Ancient Modern Finishes in 2000, I have focused not only on building beautiful walls, but also on building trust. The construction and renovation industry often faces criticism for a lack of reliability or transparency. I founded my company to provide the opposite experience.
Whether working on a large-scale commercial project or a single-room residential refresh, my approach remains consistent. I believe in showing up on time, adhering to budgets, and treating every property with the respect it deserves. My clients are my neighbors, and I pride myself on maintaining a reputation for integrity and excellence within our community.
